Steelers Bring The Energizing, Electrifying And Inspirational To Students
When the Steelers players put kids through a fun workout,the energy level was off their Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys charts.And they also got a workout themselves,as a part of the NFL United Way Hometown Huddle.
This is the 13th year that the Steelers have taken part in the Hometown Huddle, a day of volunteerism in every NFL city. The Steelers rookie class, along with the team's United Way spokesman Charlie Batch and conditioning assistant Marcel Pastoor, participated by bringing the NFL's Play60 message to Pittsburgh Linden K-5 School.
The entire student body took part in an assembly with the players as surprise guests. Once the screaming and cheering quieted down, the excited students had an opportunity to ask the players questions which ranged from how many players are on a roster, why player fines are so high and if players get in trouble if they do something wrong on the field.
Students that have excelled with perfect attendance and turning in all of their homework assignments got an additional bonus, taking part in fun and games on the playground with the players.
Pastoor set up a series of activities for the kids to participate in, with the players leading the drills. But it didn't take long for the games to change to ones the young kids play regularly – from a football version of hopscotch, to Simon Says renamed "Cameron" Says by Heyward, to 'red light, green light.'
The Steelers presented Linden a check for $2,500 to use for physical education programs and the team's training partners donated equipment used for the event to the school.
"It has been energizing, electrifying, something that has been very inspirational for our students," said Principal Victoria Burgess. "You could feel the electricity when the players talked to them about education, being on time and doing the right thing.
"The fact that the Steelers are making sure they are moving and being healthy is an excellent thing. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, a week after tying a career high with five touchdown passes, appeared to be on his way to another big afternoon.
Roethlisberger threw for 181 yards in the first half. His 11 completions included a 28-yarder to Mike Wallace that staked the Steelers to a 14-0 lead barely a minute into the second quarter.
But Roethlisberger managed just 19 passing yards after halftime. The Jaguars (1-5) also put the clamps on running back Rashard Mendenhall, who needed less than two quarters to notch his first 100-yard game of the season .
The Steelers had to hang on in a second half that left the announced crowd of 62,934 on edge in the end.
What left Roethlisberger puzzled is that nothing in the first half foreshadowed what would take place after intermission. Roethlisberger said after extending his streak of regular-season games with 200 passing yards to 14. "The sense of urgency needs to stay there. Maybe that's on me. Maybe I need to keep the guys going, trying to keep a fire under them. I felt like I tried to do that, but maybe I didn't do enough."
The Steelers came close to delivering a haymaker six minutes into the third quarter after forcing a Jacksonville punt from its own 20.
They have put themselves in good position to win three in a row for the first time this season-- assuming they can put a couple of good halves together in Arizona."(When) we play against these good teams, we have to be better," Keisel said. "But we'll continue to work, and hopefully we will."
Both Ryan Mundy and Stevenson Sylvester crashed through the line after the Steelers had anticipated one of their players getting to punter Nick Harris, who the Jaguars signed last week.

What the Steelers have to figure out before their first trip to the desert since 2007 is how they could have been so good for two quarters Sunday, and then so utterly forgettable after halftime.
